Port and Protocols

Rain had washed the roads overnight and continued to wash everything as my aunt and uncle made our way to the hospital at 7:25am on Thursday. My check in was 7:45am for my 10:45am port install. Thank God for us the hospital is 10 minutes close to my apartment.

We didn't have too wait long for my name to be called to pre-op. My aunt accompanied me around the familiar maze to a walled section so she could take my clothes once I disrobed and changed into an operating gown. I mentioned to the nurse that all the preparations seemed a bit much for a port install on my chest, an outpatient surgery. She said that when you go through the regular OR (operating room) that all the protocols have to be followed which meant it felt like my surgery prep back in January.

My surgeon did a stellar job once again. They left a needle with plastic tube hook-ups covered in gauze and tape outside the skin for tomorrow's chemo appointment which meant I couldn't take a shower. While my surgery was an hour earlier, I didn't get out until about 2pm. There was a complication of me experiencing sharp pains that brought me to tears when I breathed deeply during recovery. An x-ray of my chest was taken while I was sitting up in bed. They put a 1-inch thick large black square large enough to cover my back while a tech stood 10 feet away from me pointing a machine with light projecting cross hairs onto me while I sat up. He shot his x-ray pic and left to get immediate results.

The nurse had already injected pain medication and an anti-inflammatory drug to my IV while we waited for the results of the x-ray. Minutes later I was told there was nothing wrong with my chest and all my breathing was normal. This was double-checked later when the pain was still there. We figured out that I may have pulled a back muscle during surgery while they moved me around. Meanwhile, my aunt and uncle were getting anxious. My surgeon said they would be calling for them in a few minutes after he spoke to them. They weren't called until two hours later because I had been asleep and it had gotten too busy for my attending nurse to call. Poor things.

I was soon dressed and in a wheel chair. We had to make one stop at the salon downstairs to pick-up my wig (or hair prosthesis as was written on my prescription). I also had my uncle go through a Chik-Fil-A drive-thru for a late lunch for all of us. Our empty stomachs were making our tempers a little testy. We sat at my dining room table enjoying our chicken sandwich meals. I made coffee and I fed my uncle some ice cream for dessert. He left my aunt with me so she could make sure I was okay after surgery and also to accompany me during my first chemo appointment tomorrow. My aunt had volunteered to spend the night two weeks ago; I had been too shy to ask. I am glad she was there even as the rain continued to come.

Hugs,
Sprinkles

POST SCRIPT
Here is pic of my surgery site after my first chemo, all the tape and plastic window coverings gone. The top incision is normally on the neck based on my research. My surgeon was kind enough to save me that conspicuous scarring so it is above the longer incision site of the port. Everything is held with skin glue that should fall off later. You may see a small red dot below the longer incision. That is area where needles for future blood draws and chemo infusions will be placed; no more trying to find a vein in my arms. I am very pleased.

Rain Sweet Rain

For the first time in recent memory, we had rain all day and not just during the night. Cabal and I walked the rain together without umbrellas a couple of times. I loved it.

The Philippine Festival was this weekend and I completely blew it off. Tawny had invited me to the Renaissance Festival and I turned her down, too. Good thing I declined either event or I would have been covered in mud since both venues were outdoors. Maybe next year?

Trish beat me today by calling me first. She's been mourning the loss of her grandmother who succumbed to her complications from her hospital stay and medications a week ago. Grams was for all intents and purposes Trish's mom and best friend. Her own estranged mother has suffered mental illness which has worsened over the years.

I let her talk and tell me from start to present everything that had transpired. One of the coolest things she and her sister did was prepare their grandmother's body for viewing. Trish used her make-up artist skills and her sister used her hairdressing skills to transform Grams into a beautiful woman again. It sounds macabre, but I felt that it helped them begin to move through the process of grieving. They "talked" to her while they honored her to make sure she looked her best. Now only time will gift them more healing.

The rain continued to fall through the evening, gently nourishing the thirsty earth and washing away more dead leaves that had fallen on the sidewalk. Aah, rain.

Stormy Darkness

Blurry of flurry of activity or was that flurry of blurry of activity? Huh? I don't get it either, but you know what I mean. That's how it went, but this time without weird nerve stuff.

Nemesis Vendor sales rep had to suffer through my director, my manager and me while we went up and down both floors so he could itemize things that still needed to be done. How many techs does it take to install the rest? Now we need an additional systems analyst? Good grief. My manager and director roasted him for a while. It was nice. (Evil Kitty in the house...)

Thanks to yesterday and not having my usual list, I had to go back to grocery store for something I missed and needed after work. Rushed home to walk my doggie and beat the fierce storm coming around.

Around 8pm, the thunder was getting so loud, it startled me and drove the dog nuts. I was in the middle of eating some more Flip food when the lights cut out. I cursed for a full minute (at least) then my aunt called me. She asked what was the matter with me. I said, The lights went out, the dog is going crazy, I am trying to finish my meal and you're calling me. She then told me she would make it in a hurry. You know she didn't...Aargh. This 4'10" (and shrinking) of Filipina dynamite will be the death of me, I swear.

Finally, I used my phone's bright display to navigate my way through my apartment trying to light all the tealights around my apartment and adding more around to brighten it. Cabal kept following me and I almost tripped a few times. Just what I needed, tripping over him with candles in my hand. Soon the soft glow of candlelight was everywhere. Anyone looking in would think I just had the table lamps on for ambiance.

I finished my dinner, settled on the sofa and spoke to Angie in Los Angeles for a short bit. My apartment is very cool so I knew the heat would not penetrate the coolness for a long while. Cabal and I sat quietly until I got the urge to take the pictures below. I started out using the flash. Can you imagine seeing that from outside the apartment? Switched the settings to use no flash and produced the pics below.

Candle in one corner of my bedroom.

I love this tealight holder in the bathroom. It glows a lava ring on the counter.

One of three plaques on the ledge from the entrance to the kitchen. It is also one of the characters on my back. I like the shadow play from the tealight.

It's times like these that remind me so much of life in the Philippines as a little girl where we would have brown outs as opposed to black outs because it would only last for a little bit. We always had tapered candles on hand. We would be outside talking to each other or the neighbors and maybe even play cards in the soft glow. The brown outs weren't always during rain storms like this evening. There would almost be a sigh of disappointment when the lights would go back on. It dispelled the intimacy that had been created, revealing real life once more.

I love replaying those memories. Tonight I was able to take a short nap before the lights came back on. For an hour, I was a little island girl again.

Spaghetti and Gentle Rain. Perfect.

Surprisingly found myself zooming to work at 70mph with traffic until we all hit downtown Trampa. It wasn't too bad there either. Got to work early enough to accompany Bridget downstairs to buy some breakfast or starter fuel.

Was looking forward to having lunch with Tawny, but she had plans to visit her doctor to clear up some prescription issue. IM'ed Lisa to see if she had plans and ended up driving us to Macaroni Grill for some tasty spaghetti with meat sauce. There is nothing like satisfying a craving you've been having for days. It hit the spot just right.

Lisa needed to share some of her life-changing plans she is set to implement after the first of the year so it all worked out. Our waiter, Christian, provided nice eye candy while we dined, but we both felt our ages drooling over this much younger cutie. Sad.

Received an e-mail reminder from my dad in Chicago to me and my-sisters-who-I-don't-talk-to letting us know that my stepmother's upcoming birthday in September will be her 65th. Now the pressure is on to get a very thoughtful gift. I am usually great at thoughtful gifts...but...I am drawing a blank with my stepmother. Some crystal with engraving? Funny "hot senior mama" shirts with a Floridian flavor? Jewelry? That will stump me all weekend.

The pleasure of leaving work later than everyone is that you get to miss the torrential downpours and the effects on traffic. Drove home in light rain. I love the rain. Gentle drops blending with one another in a hypnotic pattern on my windshield during stops. Electric spiderwebs strobed their way across the dark gray sky along the way home. It was very calming and strangely comforting.

Cranky AGOL Gets Her Rain

Woke up tired and cranky from strange dreams. Kept the blinds closed from the mocking sun shining brightly throughout the day. Couldn't hide the whole time thanks to Cabal. We walked around a few times taking in the scorching heat that was like a well placed magnifying glass on each pore.

Received a call from Kathy who helped me tweak some aesthetic items on my blog (IE darker text on posts and other font color changes). The changes I really wanted to make weren't possible today. I was able to add a picture of my favorite accessory on the right margin, appropriately below the Love Quote of the Day. Just felt the need.

I called San Francisco Trish to continue our conversation from last evening. She and her boyfriend are thinking of moving in together sometime soon. Trish wants me to come and visit them once they are settled in. Would have to make a two-step trip with the other stop in Los Angeles to visit my cousin Angie. Eh. A thought for the back of my head as I consider things.

The weather finally matched my mood around 7pm. Maybe I should have taken a nap instead of doing chores and watching the boob tube to improve it? A deluge with continuous loud thunder came for a visit. The dog was not amused and kept trying to jump in my lap. Finally had to concede and read at the dining room table so he could hide under the table. Sigh.

The picture below does not do it justice, but I totally dig how the water droplets on the bottom left are in a state of suspension.

If you could see my uncharacteristic crappy typing right now, you'd order me to take a sleep aid and make a quick date with Mr. Sandman. Ooooooooorrrr I could always take the more fun route and do straight vodka shots and take up drunk blogging. I am quite the fun drunk, but certain conditions have to be present before that level is met. It's in the AGOL Handbook.

Steamy Art

Tawny and Jeff kidnapped me for a late afternoon jaunt to downtown St. Petersburg for some art therapy. We stopped first at St. Petersburg Clay Factory so Jeff could buy some clear glaze and other stuff for his kiln. My sidekick and I explored all the clay goodies on display for purchase by the artists who rent studio space there.

From the clay place, we flitted in and out of art boutiques and furniture shops marvelling at the unique offerings and also getting some inspiration for our own art.

Dinner became an Italian theme when the place Jeff had picked out was closed and was not staying open for the Downtown Art Walk tonight. The atmosphere was relaxing and became more so after the glass of tasty Shiraz I imbibed. We all agreed it was the most relaxing spot we have been in all week. The food was prepared well and the Italian music piped throughout was not intrusive during the meal. Finished with some coffee to perk me up for the art walk.

Rain drizzled for a bit and we played peek-a-boo with it under the awnings. We had our umbrellas in case it down poured. The rain produced steam from hitting the hot pavement. We were unnecessarily perspiring from the humidity and our clothes became uncomfortable which didn't dampen our fun at all.

My contribution to supporting the local artists was buying the porcelain dragonfly encircled in gold glaze below at one of the galleries. The artist was on hand to talk to visitors. She was very nice and made me feel really good about buying her art. It can be used like a pendant or as a pin. I will most likely use it as a pendant using satin ribbon or a gold chain.

We stopped at a few more galleries and let the creative vibes spin its magic on us. On the way home, we listened to recordings by British comedian Eddie Izzard and Scottish comedian Bill Connolly. It was interrupted momentarily by a call from San Francisco Trish who was checking up on me to make sure I was okay. She is so sweet.

Jeff honored my earlier request by stopping at my favorite bookseller so I could buy a new book by Dr. Wayne Dyer. I also bought a children's book that would be contributed to the Ronald McDonald House. My supportive moves today were satisfying my Spreading The Love needs.

An evening filled with beautiful art, loving for the world and good friends...What could be better?

Pesky Vendor

There is no rest for the wicked, er...AGOL. My interim boss had my undivided attention before I had my tea and coffee. Yes, I am a two-fisted drinker. I think he likes the fact I am effervescent and smiley with a can do attitude which was partially forced this morning from lack of valuable morning liquids.

May the purchasing gods save me from pesky vendors! The cute bastard from yesterday has now been demoted to just plain bastard. Little does he know that pushing me does not work, quite the opposite effect. He should have recognized by my overly polite tone that I was not happy and calling me right before lunch, too! It is all about attitude and delivery.

Yeah, he delivered again all right, an e-mail around 3-ish to me and everyone trying to get status. I am sure he liked my reply. Hee. I also called him at 5pm, as promised from earlier phone call, to apprise him of the situation. Why be a pain to your potential client when you're waiting for the ink to be on the contract? I really hate it when vendors behave stupidly as they are salivating for your business. I don't care if they are considered the hotshot of their company. Just makes them ugly to me...

Lunch was fun with the gals. It only got weird at the end when my temp decided that she needed to research getting a Facebook account after three of us discussed having an account. Sigh.

Spent the afternoon yawning. I fell asleep early last night but became wide awake around 2:30am and then forced myself to fall asleep again. It was not restful. Sleep deprivation caught up with me. All the extra coffee I drank in the afternoon just made me do the fast Asian walk down the long hallway several times.

Here's pics of our famous Florida Liquid Sunshine as Tawny and I made it out of building. Very wet and very sunny at the same time.

Gave Tawny a ride home again. I was a zombie on the way. Normally, I am more engaging in a conversation. Tawny doesn't need me to amuse her and I was happy listening while she talked.

The maid had the night off again because she was zombie. She watched The Idiot Box instead and now she is updating her blog before meeting Mr. Sandman for an early date. Let's hope he keeps her out all night. Wink.

Something in the Air

Big topic of the day was The Rain! We live in a tropical state and rain does fall here, people. Duh!

It slowly dawned on me that I am about to be busier without Bridget in the office starting tomorrow to the following week. That ought to be fun. Not. She's leaving me all alone to deal with the temp! Might have to get Tawny involved to deflect energy vampire.

A rare bout of cabin fever struck me around 2-ish. IM'ed Tawny to walk around the building to get some fresh outside air. Under the covered walkway, we were safe from the gentle rain falling. I can't believe I was begging for air this afternoon. Haven't felt like climbing walls in a long time. I couldn't breathe for some reason and needed the space. Very odd...

One of the nicest IT guys I know, Vic, helped me out by working my helpdesk ticket quickly. He provided me with a DVD of the personal folder from my boss' computer which has e-mails with large contract file attachments. He also downloaded it on my Inbox for easier access.

My desk area is rather crowded not only with my fun AGOL-y desk stuff but with files and a large network printer. Inspired by Vic's presence, I expressed my need to re-feng shui my desk. He knows me and just laughs. Before I knew it, he was rearranging my area by moving my printer and all the cords from one end to the other. When he was finished, I felt like I could breathe again. Called Tawny to come over and check it out just to make sure I wasn't being too nutty. The new more open configuration was a hit!

On the way out this evening, I ended up in the same elevator as my SVP who chatted away to me. I provided short, but encouraging answers all the way to the garage. I have never formally met her. She'll have to figure it out later. I have issues with executives not getting to know their people.

Spent a quiet evening like the rain still softly falling outside. Can't wait for the busy day tomorrow so I can zoom to the weekend.

Rain, the Wet Stuff Falling Outside

Dark, gray and raining. That was my drive to work, but I enjoyed it especially with some rockin' 80s music blasting in the car. Even with my careful planning and umbrella moves, I still got wet. Mostly from stopping at the store on the way for my temp's birthday stuff.

We did the birthday thing mid-morning. She was pleasantly surprised. Four of us ambushed her desk with cheery happy birthdays, cakey things and a card. Mission accomplished.

A little tissue cut with scissors arranged on a platter and topped with unwrapped mini-cakes...Booteefuhl!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...I need to get back to work. Funny how some of my boss' stuff I am now doing all of a sudden. Hope they hire his replacement soon. Iced coffee might help.

(gulp)

Leaky Spigot

This morning I put on my pearl earrings and was about to put on my matching pearl necklace when I remembered that it was broken. I broke it about two weeks ago during a wardrobe change. Need to find some place to get it restrung. Maybe I will ask my cousin's mother-in-law where she had hers done. Bummer.

Shamefully admitting that I read you know who's blog today. I still read it because it is usually good. In fact, it was his writing, the essence of him in his writing that made me read long enough to leave that fateful comment on his blog last December. His words wrapped around my mind like a ribbon of a heady drug before I could get a handle on it. Still don't have a handle on it apparently. He's getting all Woody Allen film on me the last couple of days. Poor thing.

When he was still known as Yummy, I would have sent him a note saying Kisses on your (fill in blank for ailment or other mysterious ouchies). Laughing out loud. It is kind of sickening, but you say the funkiest crap when it is just you and whomever...I miss the fucking idiot. Wait! No, that's not correct. I am the fucking idiot for missing him. Let's get that straight. ARGH!

Sometimes it just hits me like a drops from a leaky spigot. That's what happens when you are too giving of yourself. It takes a bit to extricate yourself from the crucible of emotions. It is not like I can NOT be myself, but most times I am just too giving. I never learn. Maybe I never want to. I really don't want to live giving less than myself, you know? I just need to honor my feelings as they arise for now as opposed to pretending they don't exist.

Speaking of being too giving, actually doing something for the temp tomorrow. It is not on the high scale of things, but it is still thoughtful and will be pretty to receive. You can't ignore birthdays. I don't want her feelings hurt and she will be surprised to receive something on a Thursday instead of the expected Friday. I teased Bridget that I didn't want her to miss out on the joy before her own vacation which starts Friday.

Oh my gosh -- Bridget! She was on the phone negotiating with her ex-husband. He is driving their son to Tennessee for a week's vacation while she is on her separate vacation in New York. Concerned about her son's safety, I heard her asking her ex-husband You're not going to drive like a retard, are you? How ironic that we were just discussing Bridget's personalized edition of Winning Friends and Influencing People.

Became very busy today and was everyone's Go-to Girl. It only means I've been there long enough to know things. These are the kind of info I will not be able to use if I ever decide to enter as a Jeopardy! contestant.

Drove home in a monsoon and thought about how Cabal will love walking in the rain. I was right. Ate a quick dinner that had jasmine rice. I noticed my eyes were starting to get round again. Watched Last Comic Standing for some laughs and the Dateline Special on recovering stolen iPods before heading for a reasonable bedtime. Not sure if I will wake up the same time or earlier. I'll let you know.

Damn, It's Stormy

The Saturday Four was a 2.5 mile hustle with Kimmee. Everyone else flaked out or had some other thing to do. I just wanted to finish in time to go home, shower and make it to my hair appointment.

First the first time ever, my hairdresser was late. I mean not just running late with clients but not inside the salon. She'd been having some remodeling work done in her house and hasn't been able to sleep with all the chaos. A pill solved that, but made her sleep through her alarm. Thank goddess she still did a good job with the color and cut.

Been putting off going to the grocery store. Cabal was running out food and treats so I had to go for him. Over an hour later and a full cart from meandering around the grocery store in the same plaza as my hairdresser, we both had food. Went outside and saw the telltale clouds.

Rushed home like a mutha to beat the storm and to put away the frozen stuff. The grocery store I just spent some shekels in is a quite a ways from my apartment. Did beat the storm and took Cabal out before all hell broke loose. It wasn't a 30-minute storm, but a few hours of storm complete with loud cracking lightning. Quite the show.

IM'ed briefly with Yummy who almost didn't make it to the date. He fell asleep watching boxing. I would! Let him off the hook early so he could catch up on his beauty sleep. Funny man. Maybe I need some, too!

Rain Brings Potluck

Bit of a switcharoo in weather today. It rained in the morning instead of the afternoon. Boy that felt just marvy! A girl who rode with me in the garage elevator commented in disgust on the humidity, "Great! My trousers are sticking to me. It's not worth putting on make-up this morning". My swift reply? "I don't know about that." AGOL Rule #2: It is always worth putting make-up on if not to finish dressing properly.

Work kept me steadily busy all day in between conversations with Bridget. She is so funny with her non-sugarcoated views on things and right now her live-in boyfriend is in the dog house. He asked her to get an outside activity as in a hobby of sorts. She chose roller derby and she practices two nights a week and some Saturday mornings. Now he's jealous of the time she spends at her new activity. Jeez.

While Tawny was in Iowa visiting her parents, she used a portion of the time to scan childhood pictures. Today she showed me the results in a PowerPoint presentation. Here's one of her with her famous curls. All her mom had to do was twist the hair, no curlers!

Tried calling Myrna on the way home to see if she wanted to have dinner with me. Her phone was busy. It turned out that she was trying to call me to ask the same thing. We met later across the road for a country-style dinner and some laughs using overexaggerated stories as we caught up on things.

I walked in the door ready to make up my time away from Cabal when my cousin Angie called. She was making her way home around Los Angeles.

In our relationship, it is usually me who comes up with odd and surprising tidbits. Unprepared, she sprung this question on me, "Did you know you can buy a scope that lets you see inside your own ear?" A whhaaaaat? The more she explained, this time bringing the Japanese into it, the deeper in laughter I sunk. Then she started to laugh because I was laughing.

Through her research, she found out that in Japan, they have salons where people can get their ears cleaned with an earspoon. What kind of wax build-up do these peeps get? This is what amazed my silly cousin: earscope tv. The page includes a youtube video demo of this Japanese tool for in-home use so you don't have to go to the salon. The best part is you can use it in your other orifices...or someone else's!

Rice and Rain

Happy First Day of Hurricane Season! Mother Nature decided to help us welcome the season with some much needed rain. The grass I like so much around my complex has vast patches of brown.

Not much today. Bridget was back at work and my boss was quiet. Had lunch with T&J at the mall and saw someone we hadn't seen for a while, but that's their story.

Someone really worked my nerve, but I am trying to let it go. Poor T&J and Bridget got to hear about it since they know this person and see them most days. When I get on a rant, it is not good. Karma was dealt within hours for this person and I didn't even have to resort to voodoo dolls!

My girls know I love my rice cooker. What a pleasant surprise to find this on a search engine page today: Rice Cooker Bread. It sounds interesting, but I wouldn't actually do it. The fire hazard warnings alone are enough to NOT do it. Which reminds me...

I haven't posted the picture below, but that is what it took to get my travel-size hair dryer to work in the UK. Can you believe it? The curling iron was out of the question. The big box in the middle was not registering green, but blinking back and forth between red and green lights. The wattage was too high. Not good. I'm sure Yummy thanked me for not testing it further.

Gave Tawny a ride home in crazy traffic thanks to the rain. I opened a can of Wolfgang Puck's Butternut Squash Soup for dinner. Wow! It was delicious. Next time, I will add tons of freshly ground black pepper. Sometimes soup just hits the spot in rainy weather.

AGOL Takes UK: Dragons and Tea with Turtles

The famed English weather finally revealed itself today! Grey clouds and a light rain greeted the morning. I cooked a big breakfast -- poor Yummy was not used to the farmer boy size portions that early, but it was all good. Armed with breakfast, walking shoes and he with a dark rain jacket with hood and me with creme jean jacket and umbrella, we set out for the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.

I didn't get to take any pictures outside the Pavilion because of the weather and pictures inside were prohibited. Just as well because there were so many rooms in this uber opulent home built by George IV. The outside reminds of India with the onion top architecture and inside was wall to wall Chinoiserie. There were so many things to note and gawk at that I was thankful for the little audio guides Yummy and I carried from room to room, giving us a good historical narrative.

It's last royal owner, Queen Victoria, sold it to the city of Brighton; it didn't meet her needs for a proper family home for she and her husband Albert and their children. Brighton was definitely the winner in that transaction...

Yummy took me to his famed Mock Turtle in The Lanes to enjoy his favorite cream teas and the best damn scones I've ever had. This tea room was rather cozy and the main floor full so we descended the stairs to the lower level. Our teas came with scones served with butter, cream (soft fluffy butter) and some killer strawberry jam. The first mouthful was heavenly. The scones do NOT look like the ones I've ordered in Starbucks at all. Those are like hockey pucks compared to these delicious morsels. All I can say is wow!

From The Lanes, we made our way to Brighton's Sea Life Centre for the local aquaria built in Victorian times. Yummy was a little worried about the fish. I kept asking them if they preferred garlic or onion. Wot? We saw gigantic sea turtles swimming among sharks in their largest tank. Experienced a submarine dive/show that cracked us both up with the agitating benches to simulate movement that coincided with the "movie".

Every minute is beer-thirty so we trudged back up The Lanes to visit The Druid's Head pub where we enjoyed -- what else but beer. This is bloody Britain and they drink by God! We also worked ourselves up to eat Mexican food. Tried to call Anton to get directions, ended up back home to get the address and took a cab. Our cab broke down and was called another one. Something about power steering fluid or was that catalytic converter? Never a dull moment.

Okay...........not a lot of Mexicans cross the pond let's just say. The Mexican food at Los Amigos (Mexican/Italian restaurant) was not like Vallarta's in Trampa. The salsa and guacamole were divine, but the rest was okay. The two beers with lime made it better. Yes, it was beer-thirty there, too.
