Omens, Wisdom, Cellophane & Free Rice

Arrived to work encountering an omen (though not alarming) but caught on the fourth floor parking garage right before catching the elevator down. I received a similar one while walking with Bridget under the covered walkway later. Might be a little too creepy to describe since it involved two small dead creatures in a beautiful repose. Even in death things can still be beautiful is the paraphrased version from Tawny when I discussed these findings with her...

There is a lady at work who reminds me of a gypsy with her seductively dark eyes, wild curly hair and her a modern gypsy version of dress. I love talking with her and we've found a mutual admiration society in one another. She says we are kindred spirits with gypsy hearts. I believe her. Today, I asked her for wisdom. Whatever comes to you...the first thought...you are my instrument of wisdom today. She said her first instinct was politically incorrect, but then said some words that held very special meaning for me. Can't share, but I know I will probably update this post a month or two from now with it when it is not so fresh on my nerves. I thanked her and told her she was a good cookie. She told me that I always look great everyday.

On my way back to my desk with breakfast in my hands to write down the wisdom, I met Lisa in the hallway who brought me a small sweet present. She saw it and thought of me. She's a good cookie, too, but she made me forget my wisdom. I had to e-mail my gypsy friend for it again.

At lunch, I told the cafe's manager about my lunch mishap yesterday and she wanted to give me free lunch today and I declined. She allowed me to pay today, but gave me a card with a free one for the future. Wasn't that nice? I was floored at her generosity.

Oh geesh...Tawny had a good laugh watching me trying to get rid of a piece of cellophane. It wouldn't have been so bad, but her husband was there and this guy named John to witness. The static was too strong between me and the cello from a small package of crackers so I ended up wrestling it with my hands. What seemed interminable, finally ended with me getting it off my hands and whispering expletives. Never a dull moment.

Left early to pick up a FedEx package at my complex's office and opened the three new votive candle holders I ordered on Saturday. They are elegant and go with my decor. Now where to put them....??

Called Myrna and she picked me up for quick eats and a trip to Old Time Pottery in Brandon to sashay (ha!) down the aisles with a cart, scouring for deals and stuff I may or may not need for the home. Ended up with stuff to make a "-scape" of some sort in my bathroom. I had an idea for it and now that I have it up, I may rearrange it again. There is a very sweet white ceramic angel my cousin Angie gave me about 12 years ago and wanted to give it a lift and a nice surround. Sometimes I swear I am a gay man trapped in a woman's body. Even gay men who know me say Wow.

My cousin Angie sent me this very smart link to Free Rice. I stopped after I got a score of 700. Don't know why I am amazed I have a vocabulary. Maybe it is because I don't get to exercise it as much as I'd like to without providing pocket dictionaries. It was good brain fun. You try it at Free Rice. How can I not love something with rice in it and it helps others?
My fellow gypsies wisdom for me today: If you seek ME, you will find ME, if you seek ME with all your heart.

It's Bunday!

I was falling asleep in my morning conference call that was also a webcast. Standing helped me stay up until I was silently begging for our vendor to end the call that had gone about 20 minutes too long. My boss, on the other hand, was starting to do the pee-pee dance in his chair and ran down the hall when our call was over. Hee.

Decided to postpone my meeting with my temp till the afternoon. I didn't want to feel extra tired before lunch so I sent the invite for later. Meanwhile, I ended up calling my bank trying to find out what happened yesterday. Funds are readily available again and all is good with the bank who apologized for the error.

Meeting with the temp was quicker than I thought, but will meet with her again tomorrow morning. Spent the afternoon catching up on stuff. Truth be told, I was bored. Sigh.

You have to see this Cute Bunny that gives us the blog post title of Bun-day. Angie sent this to me in the afternoon and the pictures almost made my teeth shatter. We're all about cute at AGOL-land.

I needed to do some food shopping but didn't feel like going to a normal grocery store so I found myself with a mini-cart at the Oriental Market. Picked up some Yaki-Soba noodles that I will stir fry later with veggies and the seasoning that came with the noodles. Splurged on a very lean cut of flank steak that I sliced later for a stir-fry with broccoli and sweet spicy sauce. Bought several other things including a couple of new Filipino items to take to my aunt's tomorrow.

The only thing I had trouble with was buying a small bag of jasmine rice. They had broken jasmine rice, but not regular long grain jasmine rice in a small bag. The only alternative was to buy a body bag size of rice. That is more than enough rice for one Asian family for a few months. I declined. The lady checking my groceries felt bad because she looked on the shelves, too. When my goodies were bagged, all of a sudden she said, Here - a gift for you. She handed me a parting gift at the end which was a new package of blueberry cookies. I thanked her and drove home.

After taking care of Cabal, my house soon smelled nicely of Asian food and I still had rice previously leftover to have with my stir-fry. Watched some really good programming like Heroes and I was set for the evening.

A Six-Year Old's Wisdom

It was family day at my aunt's house for a total of 15 adults and children this time around. We were there for a goodbye lunch for Nan's sister-in-law, Aunt Wilma. My aunt made a mouth-watering feast as usual. I saved up so I could sample everything and ended up taking some of it home to enjoy later.

I did have one plan which was to get clips of Carter since he always provides spontaneous entertainment. You can hear my voice interviewing him in the middle of our meal. This six-year old is priceless.

>>> Watch the volume please! <<<

CARTER BEFORE RICE:

CARTER AFTER RICE:

CARTER KNOWS FILIPINO:

As the family party wound down, my cousin Ida and her husband left me to take their kids home later. Ended up helping my goddaughter's twin, Crystal with her homework which she was finishing up at my uncle's computer. My cousin's printer had been acting up and needed to print out her homework.

Drove the kids home around 5pm and I drove myself for some Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks. My aunt's home has the power to sap my energy for some strange reason. Got home and took care of Cabal before e-mailing the pictures and videos taken from the party.

My friend Jill called me to demonstrate for her how skype works. She has some new computer challenged clients who need a quick tutorial. Her video was streaming, but mine was static. My webcam hasn't been properly calibrated since...nevermind. I'd better get some more usage out of it for the good money spent.

I keep looking at Carter's videos and they just make me smile with his charm. Kids are the greatest, aren't they? How can you not have a Happy Sunday after spending time with him and the other kids. They remind us that life is still...livable.

Happy Asian Comforts

Giddily anticipated doing The Saturday Four this morning. The weather was cooler and not the steam bath it has been during these walks. Kim met me for a quick version. She slept on her back wrong and I had my hair appointment. More cars were driving around than there were available spaces by the time we made it back. Felt the pressure to vacate; it was a popular destination this morning.

Went home, had a small breakfast and played with Cabal before getting ready for my hair appointment. When I arrived, I told her I wanted my hair darker and she said that she didn't have time today but I could pick out what I wanted. I settled on a Dark Blond Mahogany Brown which my current highlights will still show through but with some red and brown tint. Basically the chestnut lift I am looking for. Even if she had the time, she didn't have enough product. She had one bottle and my hair would take three! I have thick hair and lots of it. Next Saturday I have another appointment with her.

My Korean hairdresser Michelle. Sometime I will tell you the story of her life. If you know of a more mature intellectual gentleman who is single, she's game. She's recently divorced, stands 5'4" on a good day without her high heels, old enough to be my mother, owns her own business, outrageous and amazingly sweet.

Bought some tropical smoothie with mango and boba (large tapioca pearls) right after my hair appointment and called Tawny to see if she and her hubby wanted to go to lunch. She declined since their plans were already set in motion. Set off for getting my nails done instead.

My tour through Asia today led me to my Vietnamese nail technician who, in the middle of doing my hands, cajoled me into getting a spa pedicure. I only agreed since she would be the one doing it. There's something to be said about looking down and seeing your toes cute again with bright deep reddish fuchsia color. While I sat on the spa chair having my feet done, her brother came over and continued working on my hands. I did feel like a goddess. It's been a long time since I've felt that way. We givers tend to forget ourselves since we're too busy making sure everyone is taken care of and having a good time.

The afternoon was beginning to wear and I was famished -- on to the Chinese-owned Asian Store. They had some cooked offerings and I was grateful to not have to cook or settle for a sucky lunch. Bought a whole tilapia fish and cooked blue crab to go with my rice at home. Picked up a few more things before breaking down and driving over to the Philippine Store for some ready made veggies. Felt guilty for not supporting my own Asian people. (I stopped short of going to a German restaurant to complete my cultural heritage.)

My Asian treasures from my adventures today. So deeeelicious! Will be feasting on these the next few days.

Tawny told me that Kathy hadn't been feeling well. Called her to make sure she was okay and she was indeed feeling better. I regaled her with my Asian tour. I think she enjoyed hearing me joyful and giggly. It's been a while and I am determined to sustain it tomorrow.

Being around Asian immigrants made me happy today. It's this invisible camaraderie because you know how life is in your mother country and knowing that no matter how hard life gets here, it is still worth the agony and hard work. Our sense of humor takes over because crying is a waste of time when some things are out of your control. You cope by turning the sad parts into outrageous caricatures which makes you laugh the sadness away and everyone shares in that laughter. From my experience, Asians have the most outrageous sense of humor, usually bordering on the bawdy. It's all good.

Filipino Tendencies

Made it to work early and beat Bridget. My motive for getting in earlier than my normal time was to get a head start in getting to know my new boss, but I forgot he had to attend our company orientation for a couple of hours first.

When we finally got to meet our new boss, I shook his hand and got the same feeling I did when I read his resume. Kind of a like a flatline. It was odd. He seemed very nice and eager to please as we got on through the day. The man can't be all bad if he's a self-described Parrothead. I've seen Jimmy Buffett sing myself and been to two Margaritaville's (Key West and New Orleans). Time will tell.

Bridget has advanced tickets for her Roller Derby Bout this weekend, but gave Tawny and me complimentary tickets. What a sweetie! Several of us are attending and it's going to be mighty interesting. Oh, don't you worry my honeys, I will be posting some pictures of this event.

Had a nice quiet lunch; my posse was nowhere to be found. Ended up talking about Filipino food with my fellow Flip friend, Jerico. It's fun to reminisce and swap recipes with him. I am bringing him a piece of the jackfruit my aunt gave me yesterday. This fruit sold at the Asian markets is very expensive for a section. My aunt has a whole tree so I can be generous and secure in a steady supply for a while.

Been posting lots of love quotes. It's not like I ever run out of words, but I guess I am looking for other people's words. Hungry for them as a matter of fact. I don't know. Perhaps I just need a new perspective or maybe I just wanted to escape from my day for several minutes.

My late afternoon involved crisis management which made me stay 45 minutes later than I wanted. Ugh. Let's just say SVPs were involved. It was not pretty, but I think we will weather it well this week. Nothing like trial by fire for my new boss.

Felt like some comfort food tonight and in America, it usually consists of macaroni and cheese. Not too thrilling for this AGOL. My first serving of macaroni and cheese didn't come until I was 11 years old. Comfort food for me usually involves Filipino food or even plain jasmine rice. I put some rice in the cooker and before I knew it, I was breathing in the jasmine comfort. I paired it with some Filipino food I won't gross you out with in describing, but let's just say it is very exotic and not everyone would like it. It made ME feel better.

Consequently, my aunt told me a fib. She said this particular dish would not stink this time because the ingredients were special. Uh-huh. Even my Pretty Boy Dog came to the kitchen to investigate! My place will be quarantined from non-Asians for a few days. Thank goddess I have air freshener plug-ins in every room!

Misc Monday

Almost didn't hear the my cell phone ring over my morning tunes as I drove to work on the highway. For a switch it was Myrna checking up on me. She was also pleased to announce that she was quitting her job and turning into Susie Homemaker for a while. This would give her time to be at home for the improvements they are making on their property. She also informed me that she will be joining me for The Saturday Four. Yay Myrna!

Walking into work is such drudgery these days. I need a self-attitude adjustment before my new boss starts next week. Need to find my bubbles for being bubbly since I will be training him on our systems and whatnot. That should be a load of fun... I may need more bubbles to make that more convincing.

Tawny was still in Atlanta as part of an extended weekend trip with her sister Shelli. So no talking to Tawny at all during the weekend. I texted her on the way home that I missed her and she texted back that she had stories to tell. Oh goodie! Can't wait to hear about her adventures. I hope they don't annoy me. She will read that and know exactly what I mean.

Got caught in a text messaging triangle with DJ and Jamie. One was being annoying as we made plans for the gang to get together for Happy Hour this week and the other was texting in CB Talk as if we were riding on a truck. And he had the nerve to type the lyrics to Convoy and quickly follow it with another text message saying, Hope that song gets stuck in your head. To which I replied, Thank you, MF. Nothing has changed in 10 years, we all just have more expensive toys to express ourselves now. That's a 10-4, Rubber Duck.

Enjoyed a stuffed pepper tonight for dinner. A gal in the breakroom heated one up for lunch the other day and the aroma was so delicious that I had to have one soon after. Anything that is made with rice has to be good. What does that make me? Extra gooooooood. Shameless.

Rice and Rain

Happy First Day of Hurricane Season! Mother Nature decided to help us welcome the season with some much needed rain. The grass I like so much around my complex has vast patches of brown.

Not much today. Bridget was back at work and my boss was quiet. Had lunch with T&J at the mall and saw someone we hadn't seen for a while, but that's their story.

Someone really worked my nerve, but I am trying to let it go. Poor T&J and Bridget got to hear about it since they know this person and see them most days. When I get on a rant, it is not good. Karma was dealt within hours for this person and I didn't even have to resort to voodoo dolls!

My girls know I love my rice cooker. What a pleasant surprise to find this on a search engine page today: Rice Cooker Bread. It sounds interesting, but I wouldn't actually do it. The fire hazard warnings alone are enough to NOT do it. Which reminds me...

I haven't posted the picture below, but that is what it took to get my travel-size hair dryer to work in the UK. Can you believe it? The curling iron was out of the question. The big box in the middle was not registering green, but blinking back and forth between red and green lights. The wattage was too high. Not good. I'm sure Yummy thanked me for not testing it further.

Gave Tawny a ride home in crazy traffic thanks to the rain. I opened a can of Wolfgang Puck's Butternut Squash Soup for dinner. Wow! It was delicious. Next time, I will add tons of freshly ground black pepper. Sometimes soup just hits the spot in rainy weather.

AGOL Takes UK: Brighton Clear

It was a potpourri of activity today. Fortified with a light breakfast, we set about to look at paint and mill about (still magically sunny) Brighton.

Red Roaster's won Anton and Anna's recommendation for a cup of lava-thick hot chocolate. Yummy cringed when I paired it with a brownie while he had coffee and UK version of flapjacks. In the US, flapjack is slang for pancakes. These were more like a cookie bar or granola bar with the oatmeal on top.

Hot chocolate next to brownie, flapjack and coffee.

There was an emergency glass of water near the hot chocolate in case something went awry...like sugar shock.

Now to work off the chocolate...

On a clear day, you can really see beautiful Brighton!

This is the burnt skeletal remains of what was once called the West Pier. No one has dismantled it and I find that utterly charming. You can even see the remains of the bridge near the the beach, too.

Yummy was jonesing for fish and chips so we stopped by the seaside at lunch. His order had mushy peas. Uh-huh.

Part of our adventures was trying to find a Filipino deli that Anton had seen. I don't know that Filipinos actually have delis, but what do I know? Our first trip up a hill onto Montepelier Road yielded nothing so we went back down the hill near Waitrose. Yummy called Anton again and received better directions. Up the hill we go again where I saw the flag I would recognize anywhere painted on the Filipino Market store sign. I felt great considering how many Chinese stores were around Brighton. My peeps were represented.

Yummy asked me if I would speak Tagalog and I said no. We walked inside the tiny store and was greeted by a friendly (yet highly inquisitive) Filipina named Sheryl. And, yes, I spoke Tagalog -- well, more like Ta-garbage (Tagalog-English). Bought some stinky goodies and headed back down the hill for vegetables that looked like they were grown in Chernobyl from The Taj. This place was another wonder. We spent some quality time here before rounding out the shopping list at Waitrose...

Back home again and it was time to have everything mise en place by the stove. I decided to make lumpia (Filipino eggroll) with homemade sweet and sour sauce, chicken adobo with potatoes (chicken and potatoes in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and bay leaf) and pinakbet (veggies in stinky stuff and ginger). All these required a lot of slicing and dicing which Yummy happily watched me do.

I've taught many how to roll lumpia in Filipino cooking classes I have given in the past. I can roll about 50 in one hour. The filling was cooked, drained and cooled enough to assemble. Teaching Yummy how to roll these gave me great pleasure. It felt like a rite of passage. He did very well and I was proud of him. There were too many for tonight's meal so we bundled them in fours so he could have an emergency supply in his freezer.

I asked Yummy to make rice his way which cracks me up, however, it does yield perfectly cooked grains. Won't go into it. I am just spoiled by my rice cooker. It's all good.

When everything was cooked and plated, I held my breath while he tasted everything. I have gone through this many a time with friends. The first bite, I mean. It is either a hit or miss. Yummy had second helpings. He might become more of a "flip" than me at this rate!

Rice, Tea or Me

Laughter should fill everyone's day. This morning I started my day laughing with Yummy. Our differences in cultural upbringing and our individual personalities make for a wonderful time together...

My other plan today was to have lunch with Myrna before her trip to Virginia. She is helping a co-worker move back there so she can be near her family and new boyfriend. We ended up at one of our favorite Citrus Park haunts, Rice & Company - An Asian Bistro, where they serve pan-Asian food and have an impressive sushi bar. As always, we had very delicious meal accompanied by some hot jasmine tea for me and hot green tea for Myrna.

Nothing can horrify an Asian more than running out of rice. Luckily, I had more than enough jasmine rice to cook in the rice cooker this weekend. Myrna was kind enough to take us to Oceanic Supermarket after lunch so I could get another bag along with some other goodies like teas and coconut milk. I haven't been there in a long time when it was so busy that the parking overflow made its way to the business building nearby. It is Chinese New Year and the store was peppered everywhere with lanterns, banners, food and red envelopes.

Yummy and I talked again in the evening and I got to try my new packets of instant hot Thai tea which I sipped in between bouts of laughter. He really is very funny even when he's tired. Poor baby, I think he is catching a cold - his voice was a giveaway. He also reminded me tonight that it is the Year of the (Fire) Boar which is his Chinese sign. I have a distinct impression it will be his year and richly deserved, too!

Scary Meat, Mushrooms & Slimy Onions

Your AGOL is the Hostess with the Mostest! (and that's just my chest - haha) I'm hosting my second Christmas party within a month, but this time it is for my dearest old work buddies. There is a reason why our "circle of trust" is tight. It boils down to our food freakishness of allergies and what is not on the "approved list".

I always want my guests to feel extra special and enjoy my gatherings so I had to ask two if they had any food allergies or foods they couldn't stand. My Wisconsin Waif says something about a possible seafood allergy, but she's not sure until the test results get in soon. Then she mentioned mushrooms and scary meat.

WTF is scary meat? I'm thinking pteradactyl...Then she clarified "no blood, no bones, no dark meat, no gross looking fat or grizzle you know stuff like that and also nothing cute...I have the cute rule". Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Then we question the cute rule in our head because I know she didn't mean cute guys and she probably wasn't thinking Koala Kabobs either...I almost died laughing!

Then we get to Bubble Boy who is apparently allergic to life, he more recently found out he is allergic to wheat. We can dig that, AGOL just has to shop better and revise her menu...He'll just have to stay away from my Rhumba Rum Cake and the poundcake by the chocolate fountain.
Can those be made with rice flour? I am just crack waiting to happen...

I have two friends who don't like chewing into cooked onions although they like the taste of onions. It is slimy they tell me. Another one doesn't like mushrooms either. The other item on the "not approved list" are raw tomatoes especially if they are slightly heated. What can you expect from a group of IT peeps? I still love them....lucky them - spoiled brats!

Of course, what you are not reading and is the most important to memorize is the AGOL list of rules for parties. I'll save that for later. Meanwhile, I'm craving some Philly Cheesesteak with the works...

One of These Peeps (Is Not Like The Others)

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?
--from Sesame Street, by Joe Raposo and Jon Stone

This song and "Le Freak" by Chic have got to be my theme songs. If you're like me, the universe speaks to you in songs. Endless soundtracks run through my head at any given moment. It can be disconcerting especially when they become messages for the day.

Being a SINK (single income no kids) and thinking about your "upcoming plans" for the holidays just turns the amp on the Sesame Street song. This year I made the break with Thanksgiving so I wouldn't have to hear it repeating all day in between bites trytophan-laden turkey, my requisite rice & gravy and the ever favorite greenie-beanie casserole at some relative's house, usually at my aunt's. Did I mention being left out of conversations because I don't have kids in school or married to a superdad? It all started with a resolve and ended with the dreaded phone call.

On Wednesday, "Yakety Sax" from The Benny Hill Show blasted from my ho-tress pink Razr startling me from staring too long at the red LED lights stating "Now Serving 48" at the deli counter. I was number 52. It was my aunt calling and it was time for a phone call showdown. Four-foot ten inches of Filipino power against my five-foot eight inches of Whitey (my skin). How can one not crumble at the seemingly innocent question of one so...sweet?

Sweet Auntie: "Hi, Sarah Jane. It's your auntie."
Whitey: "Oh, hello. How are you? I am at Publix."
Sweet Auntie: "You are?....What are you doing for Thanksgiving?"
Whitey: "I am staying at home." (GULP!)
...and like she didn't hear me.....
Sweet Auntie: "Anyway, we are having dinner at 2:00."
Whitey: "That's nice. Thanks, but I am staying at home."
...now we have scope and crosshairs...
Sweet Auntie: "You are? (interminable silence!) Well....ok, but we're having dinner at 2:00 in case you change your mind."
Whitey: "Thank you. I will keep that in mind."

We said our goodbyes leaving her stunned and me guilty as a scum who kicked a cute puppy. How the hell do families do it? Is there a chalice of guilt passed on from one family to another? (When do I get it, goddammit?!)

The last five years have just really worked my nerve when it comes to holidays. I thought I would have my own family by now and be having my own Thanksgivings, but the universe hasn't been singing my tune. There's always a power play of who's going to get me at their table or tables if I decide to drive from one end of town to the next to do two for the day. We dutiful cousins/nieces hate to disappoint....AARGH!!! Now, don't get me wrong -- I am blessed to have a caring family, but I can't deny how I feel. This year is the year I say "no". I did. It's over.

Sigh. Not quite. Thanksgiving is still 11 days away. Please pass me the chalice with the guiltless gin, rational rum or better yet triumphant tequila.

You Just Might Be Filipino If...

Twenty-four and a half years ago seems like eons, but it was when I first came into this country to live a new life. In America! Sometimes I feel like Fievel Mousekewitz...

Being bi-racial sealed my fate of being always different and a new country would magnify that even more. I'll try to find a pic to insert later, but I was 11 years old, 5'2", and gangly with long arms and legs not to mention long dark brown hair to my butt.

I had to learn to eat more of a American cuisine which was difficult when my dad made me use a fork extensively to eat my meals. I cried a lot at the dinner table since it was awkward to pick up food with the tines. In the PI, we would 'use' the fork to push the food onto the spoon which was the main utensil used to eat. Now I am also an expert at chopsticks -- screw you, you darn fork!

For years, I tried to embrace more my white half even when it pained me to eschew my filipino side. (Musings more on that as this blog matures.) I have included the following pics of filipino art to let you know how much I've incorporated them into my decor. Flips unite!!!

I can't help that I point my full lips when someone asks me where something is located. I say 'psst' when I try to get someone's attention in the store, the flip version of echo location. I also buy a 'body bag' of rice when I go to the Asian store. I have two cabinets devoted to cooking spices and to soy sauce. My accent picks up when I talk to other Filipinos. My favorite dish is dilis and rice with a side of suka and crush bawang. (Not translating that except my friend KB calls dilis cat treats.)

The following are mobile pics of showing my Filipino pride: MABUHAY!

Size Does Matter!

Gargantuan Asian Calendar

No kind of Asian home is complete without one of these monstrosities. I've included my densely populated refrigerator so you can see the scale of this calendar. (Please note requisite Elvis magnet and Flip flag next to handle!) Sometimes these calendars have Asian food brand advertising or peculiar pics of Asian women of which we made my aunt take down one year at her house.

I have made it a tradition every mid-late December to go to Oceanic (largest Asian grocery in Trampa Bay located in downtown Trampa) and ask for this treasure. I can't help it....eating rice can make you do funny things beyond your control.
